Philosophy/Mission
The Dyslexia Center is founded on the belief that the Orton-Gillingham approach is the most effective way to teach reading, writing and spelling skills. Since Orton-Gillingham is an approach, not a program, all lessons are individualized to meet the needs of the student at the time of the lesson. The Orton-Gillingham approach is structured, sequential, multi-sensory and based on phonics and the rules of the English language.
Students are taught to learn phonics, fluency, comprehension, analysis, written expression and oral expression. Self-esteem grows and skills improve.
Teacher training programs are designed to meet the requirements of the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE). We teach all levels of Academy instruction and will structure your program to accommodate your schedule. Academy teacher training is appropriate for private tutors and classroom teachers.
When tutoring math, the Center uses a research-based. organized, systematic approach geared toward the dyslexic. Again, all lessons are individualized to meet the needs of the student.
Learning Differences we address include: phonemic awareness, comprehension, auditory processing, visual processing, grapho-motor, short and long term memory, speech/language, ADHD, receptive and expressive language issues, organization, social/emotional and more.
The Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators
The Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE) is the only teaching academy in this field approved by any accrediting board. The AOGPE is accredited by the New York State Board of Regents, considered the most stringent board in the nation. For this reason, we are confident that we offer the most thorough teacher training available.
